November 12th 2011 at 8am will start the 2011 running of the Cross Florida Individual Time Trial.

Traditionally it would start at Paisley Mountain bike Trailhead and route you north thru Silver Glenn and Lake Eaton back down south into Marshall Swamp and the Cross Florida Greenway, eventually ending up at Tucker Hill in Croom Forest.

This year we are starting backwards and going 7 miles longer bringing the total estimated mileage to 184 miles.

There are no entry fees or prizes for this event. The only way to be considered an official participant is to have in our posession however creative or lack there of a letter of intent. A Simple Im IN is enough, but if you feel to elaborate it is encouraged.

There will be no cue sheets provided for this route, only a GPX file and instructions on how to use said file. Riders are encouraged to use a GPS.

The route is composed of Singletrack, forest road, paved roads, bike trails, double track and grassy abandoned easements. This is an at your own risk personal challenge that each rider voluntarily wants to engage in. There is merely a recommended start time for the route, but riders can start at any time.

Tracking is established by using a SPOT device. SPOT device is required for the participation as Trackleaders will be providing coverage at Trackleaders dot com. If you do not own a SPOT satellite tracking unit they are available from Trackleaders at a very reasonable cost.

Rules:

1. You must complete the route under your own power. Once you set foot in a motored power vehicle you are voluntarily withdrawing from the challenge.

2. There is a no drafting rule in effect.

3. You must be able to safely carry yourself the length of the route. You can only obtain supplies from commercial establishments along or near the route. You cannot pre arrange any kind of support or supplies and there are no SAG vehicles allowed.

4. There will be 10 checkpoints that you are required to provide photographic evidence for. Some checkpoints may require video documentation. In an effort to prove that you passed these areas you can either email your pics and videos to Nakedindian@singletracksamurai.com or you can post them on your facebook wall for me to see and verify.

There will be some checkpoints that will be similar for the 2011 event, but some that will be different. To keep things interesting the checkpoints will be revealed the morning of the event. One checkpoint will allow for a time bonus of 2 hours, any missing checkpoints results in a time deduction of 30 minutes.

5. You can take as long as you need to complete the challenge, there is no time limit and no cut offs.

I hope this is the year you decide to give the route a try.

XFL racers will need to devise methods to carry the units. a few of the units have carrying cases but not all. there is a lanyard loop on the back of the unit that can be used with zip ties. generally the devices should be outside of packs with a clear view of the sky if you want to get good regular transmission.. the antenna is under the SPOT logo.

each unit will have the racer’s name and emergency contact info associated with it however it is important to communicate to the racers that we do NOT respond to –or even receive–911 destress signals from the unit. those signals go directly to the local 911 dispatch offices along the course.

i will share with you a unit operation cheat sheet that you should provide racers for using the device. its kind of tricky to get them into tracking mode. you will need to test them all as soon as you get them. none of the units will come with AA lithiums. they need them. XFL is short enough that units batteries will not be used. tell the riders to keep their batteries. they are not cheap and will only be 10% drained post-race.

Thanks,

IF there is anything I can personally do to help you and keep your cost down for the event let me know.

I am willing to offer up space at my home floor space, couch space, backyard camping space, hammock hanging space, whatever you need if you need it to get up there the day before to help you guys out.

Just email me at nakedindian99 at aol dot com and let me know.

If not there are hotels in Deland Florida, which is the closest city to paisley with hotels. You can also camp at Clearwater lake.

Stay posted to the race blog for the most current updates and information.

spot tracker site is up, the link is a couple of post before this, what that will do it will allow your loved ones, friends or whomever to view your progress along the course and see how your doing. It also will let them know that your alive and well, and it also has a 911 button, in the event that something happens and you need help, you push that button, rescue will find you.

What else? Just holler at me, and let me know. The only thing I cant help with is transportation.

LOL, Im not exactly sure how I am getting to the race, I do have a friend who lives close to their, I may park my car there and ride to the race? So who knows… LOL, I got a ride home though…

Ok, good luck, with your prep, anything just ask!

The race clock is ticking and the big day draws near.

The spot units will be available and the route has been mailed off to create a site with the map so that the units will track on it.

Quite honestly I cant believe all the attention my little race has received and all the generous support from people outside the state. I can hardly get people in my own area to support it, but people from hundreds and thousand miles away willingly contribute to give rise and encourage the fine art of self supported touring.

Remember, On Race day, there will be a riders meeting at 5am. At that time we will give out the spot units as well as a brief tutorial on how to use them. AS well, there will be a “surprise” requirement the day of the race that every competitor will just have to deal with, LOL, its part of the fun folks. Remember to make a copy of the required photography and video checkpoints and to have a camera available. As well as remember to make sure you are as prepared as possible, although the course conditions are not difficult in terms of technical skills, the sheer vastness and the distance you cover will definetely make up for it. As well, what I love most about the route is that you get to experience that “big country, great wide open” feel that is sometimes not easily obtained in our “flat” state of Florida.

I am excited and look forward to seeing everyone at 5am on October 10th for the Mandatory riders meeting. IF anyone wants or needs a place to post up the night before, I am willing to provide camping space in my backyard to help you out and get you out there earlier, if not, you can try to find hotel lodging in Deland which is closest city to the race location. Good luck.

thanks, Looking forward to a great event and a history making ride!!!

Laters,

I am sending the final list for the SPOT devices today.

These SPOT devices will be provided to racers at no charge for the duration of the event. Once the race is over they will be boxed up and returned. There is no charge.

SO if your still interested in taking a shot at this fun little ride in October, email me at Nakedindian99 at aol dot com.

If not, I understand, maybe next year.

With these SPOT devices, people at home will be able to watch the race unfold from their very own living rooms.

FUN. They can keep track of the racers progress as they make their way across the course and they can see the drama of the action as it unfolds.

We are planning as well to have a Volunteer out on course taking pictures so we can get some live photos of the days event loaded up as it happens.

Exciting stuff!

Take Care,
